The Presidency has moved to dispel rumours of a leadership shake-up in Nigeria's security architecture, clarifying that National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu remains in his post and that the newly created Office of the Special Adviser on Homeland Security is complementary, not a replacement.

Speculation about Ribadu's status intensified after President Bola Tinubu appointed retired Major General Adeyinka Fadewa as the first Special Adviser on Homeland Security. Some reports had suggested the new office would duplicate or supersede the NSA's functions.

A statement from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday said Ribadu "continues to serve as the President's principal adviser on all matters relating to national security." The Homeland Security office, it explained, will focus on internal threats, coordination of domestic security agencies, and policy harmonisation.

"The two offices are distinct but collaborative. The NSA retains oversight of external and general security, intelligence, and defence matters. The Special Adviser on Homeland Security will focus on internal security coordination, community engagement, and strategic policy advisory," the statement read.

The clarification is expected to calm speculation about friction within the security establishment.
