Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Federal Government has officially declared a five-day public holiday to mark this year's Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, granting citizens an extended break from Wednesday, 21 May, through to Monday, 26 May 2026. The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

The Minister congratulated the Muslim Ummah both at home and in the diaspora on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir, the festival of sacrifice. He urged the faithful to use the period to pray for peace, unity, and the continued progress of the nation. "As we celebrate, let us reflect on the values of sacrifice, obedience, and charity that this season embodies. The government remains committed to creating an environment where every Nigerian can thrive," Tunji-Ojo stated.

The declaration follows the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar's announcement on Sunday confirming that Monday, 18th May 2026, marked the first day of Zulhijja 1447AH, which set the Eid-el-Kabir date. The five-day break is one of the longest public holiday declarations in recent memory and is expected to facilitate significant domestic travel as millions of Nigerians journey to their hometowns and villages for the festivities.

Security agencies have been placed on high alert, with the Inspector-General of Police directing all state commands to intensify patrols and surveillance along major highways, places of worship, and recreational centres. The IGP also urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the nearest security post. The Federal Road Safety Corps has announced the deployment of additional personnel and equipment to manage the anticipated surge in traffic.

The Eid-el-Kabir celebration, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It is marked by prayers, the slaughtering of rams and other permissible animals, and the distribution of meat to family, friends, and the less privileged. Markets across the country have witnessed increased activity as families make purchases for the festivities, with ram sellers reporting brisk business despite the high cost of livestock.
