Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dramatically withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress governorship primaries, just hours before the exercise was scheduled to hold on Thursday. The governor announced his decision in a personally signed statement released on Wednesday night, bringing to a climax weeks of intense political manoeuvring and speculation about his standing within the party.
In the statement titled "My decision to withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries," Fubara said: "After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries. I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party."
The governor framed his withdrawal as an act of sacrifice rather than surrender. "Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest," he stated.
Addressing his supporters directly, Fubara acknowledged their disappointment. "To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey — who gave their time, resources, prayers, and unwavering hope — I offer my deepest gratitude. I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel. Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way. But please know that your loyalty and trust were never in vain."
In a cryptic passage that is likely to fuel further speculation about the behind-the-scenes power struggle that defined his relationship with his erstwhile political godfather, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Fubara added: "As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose. It is enough to say that I have faced immense pressures and difficult choices, but my love for Rivers State remains greater than anything else."
The governor thanked the APC for the platform and extended a special appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, "for his support and encouragement." He urged all party faithful and supporters to remain steadfast, declaring that "the APC remains our collective home." Fubara emphasised that he stepped aside "not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity," and vowed to serve out the remainder of his term.
Fubara's withdrawal effectively ends his bid for a second term and clears the path for the emergence of a new APC candidate in Rivers State. The governor's relationship with Wike, who installed him as his successor in 2023, deteriorated into a bitter public feud that paralysed governance in the state for months and required presidential intervention. Wike's camp is widely believed to favour the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, as the preferred governorship candidate.
The APC governorship primary in Rivers State is now expected to proceed with other aspirants, with the outcome certain to reshape the political dynamics of the oil-rich state ahead of the 2027 elections.
