The Christian Association of Nigeria has condemned the abduction of 46 students and staff members from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the incident as a "national disgrace" that demands immediate and forceful government action.
In a statement signed by its National President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, and released on Tuesday, CAN expressed deep anguish over the fate of the abducted children and the brutal killing of one of the teachers, Michael Oyedokun, who was beheaded by his captors over the weekend.
"We are outraged. It is a national disgrace that schools, which should be sanctuaries of learning, have become hunting grounds for criminals. Nigerians are tired of condolences without consequences. The government must act decisively to rescue these children and bring the perpetrators to justice," Archbishop Okoh said.
CAN called for the immediate deployment of all necessary resources to secure the release of the remaining captives and urged the Federal Government to convene an emergency security meeting with South-West governors. The organisation also called for the strengthening of community policing, the deployment of technology for forest surveillance, and stiffer penalties for kidnapping.
