Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Federal High Court in Abuja will today, 26 May, deliver its judgment in the suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election. The ruling, which could dramatically reshape the political landscape, will be delivered by Justice Peter Lifu.

The suit, filed by a political group, argues that Jonathan has already served two terms as President, one as acting President following the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua in 2010, and one as elected President from 2011 to 2015, and is therefore constitutionally barred under Section 137(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution from seeking a fresh term.

Jonathan's legal team, led by Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), has argued that his time as acting President does not constitute a full term within the meaning of the Constitution and that he is fully eligible to contest. The Independent National Electoral Commission, listed as a defendant, has said it will abide by the court's decision.

Jonathan, who has not formally declared his candidacy but has acknowledged consulting widely, has been cleared as the sole presidential aspirant of the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party. The PDP has already granted him a waiver from its screening process.

The judgment is expected to attract significant national attention, and security has been beefed up around the court premises. Whichever way the ruling goes, it is likely to be appealed to the Court of Appeal and ultimately the Supreme Court.
