Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in the sum of ₦100 million, following weeks of detention by security operatives without formal charges.
In her ruling on Monday, the judge set stringent conditions for the bail. The surety, who must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17, must reside in either Maitama or Asokoro districts of Abuja and deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property at the court registry. El-Rufai is required to surrender all international passports and report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services on the last Friday of every month.
The former governor was taken into custody last month, and his detention had become a subject of intense political controversy. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several civil society groups had condemned the detention as an assault on civil liberties, particularly as no formal charges were made public.
Justice Abdulmalik, while granting bail, noted that the prosecution had not opposed the application but urged the court to impose conditions that would ensure the defendant's availability for trial. The judge adjourned the case to a date yet to be fixed for the commencement of trial.
El-Rufai's legal team expressed relief at the ruling and said they would work to meet the bail conditions promptly. The former governor had not commented publicly at the time of this briefing.
