At least 50 serving members of the House of Representatives have lost their return tickets to the 11th National Assembly following the All Progressives Congress primaries held across federal constituencies on Saturday.
The casualties include several committee chairmen and ranking members who have wielded significant influence over legislation and oversight in the current Assembly. In several states, consensus arrangements imposed by state governors led to the exclusion of incumbent lawmakers, while in others, fierce contests saw sitting members defeated at the ballot.
A review of results by Prime Brief Media shows that the purge cuts across geopolitical zones, with the North-Central and South-West recording some of the highest numbers of sitting members denied renomination. In some constituencies, the primaries were marred by allegations of manipulation and violence, leading to protests and threats of defection.
APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka acknowledged that the primaries had been competitive but insisted the process was largely free and fair. "Primaries are by nature contestations. The party is bigger than any individual, and we urge all aspirants to accept the outcomes and support the party," Morka said.
The turnover of over 50 lawmakers, representing about 14 per cent of the APC's House caucus, is likely to have significant implications for the leadership structure and legislative agenda of the 11th House if the APC retains its majority in the 2027 elections.
