Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Two serving police officers attached to the Akwa Ibom State Command have been detained in Cross River State after they were intercepted with firearms and ammunition during a joint stop-and-search operation in Biase Local Government Area.

Police sources told Prime Brief Media that the officers were intercepted at a checkpoint mounted by a combined team of police and local vigilantes on Wednesday. The officers, whose identities have not been officially released, were travelling in a private vehicle when the firearms were discovered. The nature and quantity of the arms and ammunition recovered have not been disclosed.

The Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the detention. "Two officers are in our custody and are undergoing interrogation. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding their movement and the firearms recovered. The matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves," the spokesman said.

The interception occurred against the backdrop of ongoing communal tensions between the Ugep and Idomi communities in the area, which have previously escalated into violent clashes. Security agencies have maintained heightened patrols to prevent a further breakdown of law and order.

Efforts to obtain comment from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command were not immediately successful. The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether the officers will face internal disciplinary action or criminal prosecution.
