The Lagos State Government has confirmed that a suspected case of the Ebola virus has been identified in a traveller who arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport from the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising the stakes in Nigeria's effort to prevent the importation of the deadly disease.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, announced the development at a press briefing on Friday. He said the patient, whose identity has not been disclosed, was detected by Port Health officials during routine screening. The traveller presented with fever, fatigue, and vomiting symptoms consistent with early-stage Ebola, and was immediately isolated.

"The patient has been transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, where they are receiving care under strict infection prevention and control protocols. Samples have been taken for confirmatory testing. We are also tracing all contacts, including passengers and crew on the flight," Prof. Abayomi said.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has activated its National Emergency Operations Centre, and the Federal Ministry of Health is coordinating with the Lagos State Government and international partners. Prof. Abayomi urged Lagos residents to remain calm, maintain good hygiene, and report any symptoms of concern to the nearest health facility.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now surpassed 1,000 cases and 220 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine currently exists.

Nigeria successfully contained an Ebola outbreak in 2014, limiting transmission to 19 confirmed cases and seven deaths.
