Abia State Governor Alex Otti has formally defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress, becoming the latest opposition governor to join the ruling party.

Governor Otti announced his defection at a press conference in Umuahia on Friday, flanked by APC leaders from the state and national levels. He said his decision was motivated by the need to align Abia State with the federal government to attract development and investment.

"Politics is about people, not ideology. Abia State needs to be at the centre of federal politics to maximise our benefits. After extensive consultations, I have decided to join the APC and support President Tinubu's vision for Nigeria," Otti said.

The APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, welcomed the governor, describing his defection as a major political gain for the party in the South-East. "Governor Otti is a man of integrity and competence. We are delighted to have him in the APC," Yilwatda said.

Otti's defection leaves the Labour Party without any sitting governor and strengthens the APC's hold on the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
