Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Former Minister of Education and co-founder of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has delivered a scathing condemnation of the Federal Government's handling of the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State, declaring that Nigeria's Children's Day celebration on 27 May was a "National Day of Shame."

Ezekwesili, in a series of posts on her verified social media handles on Wednesday, said it was unconscionable for the nation to celebrate children while over 40 of them remain in the custody of kidnappers in the forests of Oyo State.

"Nigeria's Children's Day is a National Day of Shame. We cannot celebrate our children while dozens of them are languishing in the hands of terrorists. The government has failed in its most sacred duty the protection of the vulnerable. The non-rescue of those children is a stain on this nation," Ezekwesili wrote.

She demanded that the government deploy all necessary resources to rescue the abductees and to bring those responsible to justice. The former minister also called for a comprehensive overhaul of school security across the country.

The students and staff of three schools in Oriire LGA were abducted on 15 May. One teacher, Michael Oyedokun, has been killed by the captors. The military has deployed surveillance aircraft and special forces to support the rescue operation.
