Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Negotiations between the Federal Government and non-teaching staff unions in the university system ended in a stalemate on Sunday, heightening the risk of a sweeping industrial action that could shut down campuses across the country.

The joint leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions met with the federal delegation, led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, at the Federal Ministry of Education. The unions are demanding the immediate release of earned allowances, improved remuneration, and the payment of the arrears of the minimum wage.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi described the government's presentation as “lacking substance and failing to address the core demands of our members.” They gave the government until the adjourned meeting on Tuesday to produce a concrete, time-bound offer.

“We have exercised maximum patience. Our members have been shortchanged for too long. We are not issuing an ultimatum for the sake of it. By Tuesday, if the government fails to commit to a clear payment schedule and address the issues of consequential adjustments and salary parity, the consequence will be an indefinite strike,” the communiqué stated.

The government delegation, which included officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office, argued that the fiscal constraints facing the economy must be taken into account and appealed for more time to harmonize the demands with the broader public wage policy under consideration.

University administrations are already grappling with the academic calendar disruption from the prolonged ASUU strike earlier in the year. A strike by non-teaching staff would effectively paralyze the entire university system, including examinations, admissions, and campus services.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to both parties to reach an amicable resolution, warning that students cannot afford another year of academic disruption.
