TEAM NIGERIA SEEKS MORE WORLD RELAYS TICKETS ON FINAL DAY IN GABORONE

Team Nigeria is poised for a grandstand finish at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay squads and the mixed relay team all lining up for decisive heats on the final day of competition.

Having already secured qualification in the women’s 4x100m event through the explosive performances of Blessing Ogundiran, Rosemary Chukwuma, and their teammates, Nigeria entered the final day determined to book additional slots for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing.

The men’s 4x100m team, anchored by sprint star Favour Ashe and Tokyo Olympic finalist Enoch Adegoke, advanced comfortably through their heat, but the team's management says the focus is now on the 4x400m events, which offer more qualification berths and are seen as Nigeria's strongest medal prospects beyond the short sprints.

The mixed 4x400m relay squad, which features Chidi Okezie and Patience Okon George, arrived in Gaborone confident after impressive training times. In an interview with Prime Brief Media, Okezie said, “We have the right chemistry and the hunger to deliver. The target today is to secure the automatic ticket and then give a strong performance in the final.”

The World Relays are the primary qualification pathway for the Beijing World Championships, with the top 14 finishers in each event earning automatic spots. Nigeria’s National Sports Commission had set a target of at least four relay qualifications from Gaborone, and the team looks on course to meet or exceed that objective.

Team officials attribute the strong showing to improved preparation and the resolution of earlier administrative issues that had created uncertainty around athlete availability.
