The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has announced that the Federal Government has reversed its earlier decision to close Eko Bridge in Lagos for maintenance, following a personal inspection of the structure and a review of the potential impact of a shutdown.
Umahi made the disclosure on Tuesday after touring the bridge alongside officials of the Federal Ministry of Works and contractors. He said the initial plan to close the bridge, which is one of the busiest in the commercial capital, would have caused severe traffic gridlock and economic losses.
"After inspecting the bridge and evaluating the situation, we have decided not to close Eko Bridge. We will adopt alternative maintenance approaches that allow traffic to flow while repairs are carried out. The government is sensitive to the plight of commuters and businesses," Umahi said.
The minister assured that the structural integrity of the bridge is not in immediate danger but said routine maintenance is necessary to prolong its lifespan. He directed contractors to work during off-peak hours and to ensure that at least two lanes remain open to traffic at all times during the repairs.
The decision has been welcomed by residents, motorists, and business owners who rely on the bridge for daily movement between Lagos Island and the Mainland.
