Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the spate of terrorist attacks targeting schools in Nigeria, describing the deliberate assault on educational institutions as a grave violation of international humanitarian law.

Responding to a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the global body is alarmed by the recent coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, which resulted in the abduction of over 40 students and staff and the brutal killing of a teacher.

"The targeting of schools and the abduction of children is utterly unacceptable. Schools must be safe havens for learning, not theatres of terror. We call on the Nigerian authorities to take all necessary measures to protect educational institutions and to bring the perpetrators to justice," Dujarric said.

The UN's intervention adds to growing international concern over the safety of schools in Nigeria. The country has witnessed multiple school abductions in recent years, from Chibok in 2014 to Dapchi in 2018, and most recently in Oyo and Borno states. The United Nations Children's Fund has repeatedly warned that attacks on education rob children of their futures and destabilise entire communities.

Dujarric said the UN stands ready to support Nigeria in strengthening school safety measures and ensuring that the right to education is not extinguished by terror.
