Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has issued a strong declaration that the cycle of killings in Plateau State will not be allowed to continue, as he vowed to treat the escalating attacks in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas as full-blown acts of terrorism. Speaking during a statewide broadcast on Thursday, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the latest massacre of mourners at a mass burial in the Nding Sesut community, which drew international condemnation.

"I want to state categorically that these killings won't continue. We will treat these attacks as terrorism and deploy every lawful resource to protect our people," Mutfwang declared. The governor suggested that the violence may not be purely communal but could have political undertones, aimed at destabilising the state ahead of the 2027 general elections. "There are forces who believe that by creating chaos, they can achieve political objectives. We will not allow it," he added.

The governor's remarks come just days after gunmen attacked mourners during a mass burial in Barkin Ladi, killing several people. The incident prompted a US lawmaker, Riley Moore, to call on President Donald Trump to consider sanctions against Nigeria, citing the government's alleged failure to protect Christian communities in the Middle Belt despite early warnings.

Governor Mutfwang said his administration was working closely with federal security agencies and has approved the establishment of a joint security operations centre to coordinate rapid responses. He also announced the immediate recruitment of additional community policing personnel and the deployment of surveillance technology in vulnerable areas. "We are not waiting for Abuja to solve our problems. We are taking the fight to the criminals," he said.

The governor called on communities to resist the temptation of reprisal attacks and urged traditional and religious leaders to promote peacebuilding efforts. He also appealed to the international community for intelligence-sharing and logistical support in combating the violence.
