Former President Goodluck Jonathan has finally responded to mounting pressure from youth groups and political associates urging him to enter the 2027 presidential race, stating through a spokesperson that he will "consult widely" before arriving at a final decision. The statement, issued on Thursday, is the clearest indication yet that the former president is seriously weighing a return to the highest political office.

Hundreds of youth activists under the auspices of the National Youth Council of Nigeria had earlier staged a rally in Abuja, carrying placards and chanting slogans calling on Jonathan to contest. They described him as a symbol of national unity and peace. In his response, Jonathan thanked the youths for their confidence in him but stopped short of declaring his candidacy. "I have heard your voices. I will consult widely with stakeholders, elders, and my family. At the appropriate time, I will speak," the former president said.

However, legal hurdles remain. Sources close to Jonathan confirmed to Prime Brief Media that he intends to appear in court in connection with an eligibility suit filed by a civil society group challenging his qualification to run for a second elected term, having already served one full term and part of the late President Umaru Yar'Adua's tenure. Constitutional lawyers remain divided on whether Jonathan's previous service bars him from contesting again under the current constitutional framework.

The former president's potential entry into the race would significantly reshape the political landscape. Jonathan, who lost the 2015 election to Muhammadu Buhari and gracefully conceded defeat, remains a respected figure both locally and internationally. His entry could draw support from the South-South, parts of the North, and swing states that may be disillusioned with the major parties.

Political analysts note that Jonathan has not indicated under which party platform he would contest, though the People's Democratic Party (PDP) remains his natural base, despite the internal crisis currently rocking the party. The APC has not officially commented on the development.
