Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Unknown gunmen abducted a Fulani herdsman, Yahaya Sulaiman, along the Iloko/Ijebu Jesa Road in Osun State on Monday night, and have since contacted his family demanding a ransom of ₦70 million, police have confirmed.

The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, told journalists on Wednesday that the incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. as Sulaiman was travelling along the road. Ojelabi confirmed that the victim was specifically targeted, though he did not disclose the exact circumstances that led to the abduction.

"It is confirmed. The command is aware of the incident and has deployed tactical teams to track down the kidnappers and ensure the victim is rescued unharmed. We are working on credible leads," Ojelabi said.

A source close to the family, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, told Prime Brief Media that the kidnappers made contact on Tuesday morning, demanding the ₦70 million ransom. "They allowed the victim to speak briefly to confirm he is alive. The family is distraught and is appealing for help," the source said.

The abduction of a Fulani herdsman by unknown gunmen is unusual in Osun State, where kidnapping for ransom has typically targeted businesspeople, travellers, and public figures. While the South-West has experienced an increase in abductions along major highways, most cases have been attributed to bandit networks, with victims drawn from all ethnic and occupational groups.

Police assured the public that all resources were being deployed to secure Sulaiman's safe return and to apprehend those responsible. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in Osun had not issued a statement at press time.
