Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Senate erupted into a rowdy session on Wednesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole engaged in a dramatic confrontation over an amendment to the chamber's standing rules, exposing simmering tensions among lawmakers.

Trouble began when the Senate Leader moved a motion to adopt a new set of standing rules, which, according to the motion, had been circulated to members ahead of the session. However, Senator Oshiomhole, representing Edo North and a former Governor of Edo State, rose to challenge the procedure, arguing that the amendments had not been properly debated and that the version being presented from the floor differed from the document circulated earlier.

"You cannot ambush us with new provisions we have not seen. This is a chamber of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not a cult. We must follow due process," Oshiomhole thundered, gesturing emphatically at the copy of the rules on his desk.

Akpabio, visibly irked, ruled Oshiomhole out of order, insisting that the rules had been properly circulated and that the Senate had the authority to amend its procedures. "Senator Oshiomhole, you are out of order. The rules have been circulated, and the motion is properly before the Senate. Take your seat," Akpabio directed.

But Oshiomhole refused to yield, prompting a back-and-forth that lasted several minutes as other senators began shouting from their seats. The Chief Whip and Deputy Senate President attempted to calm nerves, but the session remained tense until Akpabio called for a closed-door executive session, which lasted over an hour.

When the open session resumed, the Senate Leader announced that consideration of the rules had been deferred to allow for wider consultation. No vote was taken.

The confrontation is the latest in a series of disputes within the 10th Senate over procedural matters. Political analysts say the clashes reflect deeper fault lines over the management of the chamber. Oshiomhole, a heavyweight within the ruling All Progressives Congress, has occasionally challenged the Senate leadership on procedure, even as he remains a key ally of President Bola Tinubu.
