Jos, Plateau State – By Prime Brief Media
Suspected gunmen have killed a 25-year-old vigilante, Daniel Danladi Choji, during an attack on Tanjol village in Jol District, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Monday night. The attack, which sent residents into panic, is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting rural communities in the state.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the Vwak and Tanjol areas in more than five separate groups, firing indiscriminately. They were eventually repelled by a combined team of Operation Rainbow, a state-backed security outfit, and other security operatives who responded to distress calls. Mr. Bulus Jok, a member of the community, confirmed the incident and said the deceased was a vigilante who was shot while on patrol.
"He was one of our brave young men trying to protect the community. He was gunned down while on patrol. We are in shock and fear," Jok told Prime Brief Media.
The Berom Youth Moulder-Association, a prominent ethnic youth group in Plateau State, has strongly condemned the attack. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rwang Tengwong, the group called on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to take urgent, decisive steps to prevent further violence.
"The attack on Tanjol is yet another tragic reminder of the vulnerability of our rural communities. We urge the authorities to halt grazing activities in areas that have become flashpoints. There is a clear link between these movements and the repeated attacks on our villages. We demand intensified military operations in known enclaves of armed groups. Failure to act decisively will lead to continued loss of lives," Tengwong said.
The association warned that the persistent violence is stretching the resilience of communities to breaking point and called for a comprehensive security strategy to protect farming and mining settlements across Plateau and the wider Middle Belt region.
Efforts to reach spokespersons for Operation Rainbow and the Plateau State Police Command for official confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. Prime Brief Media is working to independently verify further details and will provide updates as they become available.
The killing of the vigilante comes just days after gunmen attacked mourners at a mass burial in Barkin Ladi, an atrocity that drew international condemnation. Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Bassa local government areas have borne the brunt of a relentless cycle of violence that has claimed hundreds of lives since late 2025.
Prime Brief Media will continue to track security and rescue efforts across the state as this story develops.
