Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Nigerian Communications Commission has launched a major push for enhanced judicial protection of the nation's telecommunications infrastructure, citing alarming data that underscores the scale of vandalism threatening the sector.

At a workshop for judges and prosecutors in Abuja on Tuesday, the NCC's Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, presented figures showing that 656 generators were stolen from telecom sites in 2025 alone, while approximately 1,100 fibre cuts are recorded weekly. In just 88 days this year, 445 incidents of infrastructure vandalism were documented.

"These are not just statistics. Every cut fibre, every stolen generator, translates to dropped calls, failed data sessions, and disrupted financial services. It is an attack on the digital economy and national security," Maida said.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who declared the workshop open, acknowledged the gravity of the challenge. "The courts cannot remain detached from the realities of the digital age. Vandalism of critical national infrastructure is an economic crime, and we must treat it as such. The judiciary will support the NCC's efforts to enforce the law," she said.

The NCC is advocating for stiffer penalties, specialised courts or designated judges for telecom infrastructure cases, and the declaration of telecom assets as critical national infrastructure.
