Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

At least six persons have been confirmed dead following a bomb explosion along the Bagega–Anka road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State, in the latest incident underscoring the deteriorating security situation in the North-West.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yazid Abubakar, the explosion occurred on Friday evening, killing six passengers instantly. Several other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a nearby healthcare facility for treatment.

"At about 5:30 p.m. on Friday, an explosive device detonated along the Bagega–Anka road, killing six persons on the spot. Police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene to secure the area and evacuate victims. An investigation has been launched to determine the nature and origin of the explosive device," the statement read.

The Bagega–Anka corridor has been one of the most dangerous routes in Zamfara State, which has been at the epicentre of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the North-West for years. While the use of improvised explosive devices has been less common in the region compared to the North-East, security analysts have warned that bandit groups are increasingly adopting tactics associated with jihadist insurgencies.

Community sources told Prime Brief Media that the vehicle affected was a commercial bus carrying passengers from Bagega to Anka. There were fears that the casualty figure could rise as some of the injured were in critical condition.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion has fallen on armed bandit networks that operate extensively across the Anka, Bagega, and Maru axes. The military's Operation Hadarin Daji has conducted multiple operations in the area, but the persistence of attacks underscores the challenge of securing rural communities in the region.
