Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

A police inspector attached to the Borno State Police Command, Abdulkadir Garba, popularly known as "Buratai," has been killed by a lightning strike while coordinating vehicle parking in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. According to the Public Relations Officer, ASP Daso Nahum, the incident occurred during a thunderstorm on Friday afternoon. Inspector Garba was on duty at a busy intersection when lightning struck. His colleague, ASP Wazani Adamu, who was also at the scene, survived the incident.

"It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the passing of Inspector Abdulkadir Garba, who died in a lightning strike while performing his official duties. He was a diligent officer who served the Command with dedication and commitment. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time," the statement read.

Colleagues described the late inspector, affectionately called "Buratai" by motorists and residents, as a dedicated officer known for his calm demeanour and effectiveness in managing the often chaotic traffic in parts of Maiduguri. "He was always at his post, rain or shine. His death is a great loss to the Command and the community he served," a fellow officer told Prime Brief Media.

Lightning strikes, while rare, are not unknown in the Sahelian climate of Borno State, particularly during the onset of the rainy season. The police said Garba's remains have been released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
