Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a pre-dawn attack on a Forward Operating Base in Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday, killing two Nigerian Army soldiers before being repelled. The army confirmed the attack in a statement issued by the Director of Army Public Relations, who said troops displayed "exemplary courage" in defending the base.

"At approximately 0400 hours, ISWAP terrorists attempted to overrun the Magumeri Forward Operating Base using gun trucks and mortars. Our troops gallantly and decisively repelled the attack, inflicting heavy casualties on the terrorists. Sadly, two soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice while three others sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention," the statement read, according to preliminary accounts from military sources, which Prime Brief Media is working to independently verify.

Magumeri, located about 50 kilometres north of Maiduguri, lies along a strategic route that has witnessed repeated insurgent attacks over the years. ISWAP and its rival faction, Boko Haram, have continued to stage ambushes and raids despite sustained military offensives. The attack comes weeks after the military announced the destruction of several ISWAP camps and the killing of high-value commanders in the Lake Chad region.

Security analysts say the attack demonstrates ISWAP's residual capacity to strike at military installations, even as the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Multinational Joint Task Force continue to degrade the group's operational capabilities. "The insurgents are adapting. They are shifting to targeted raids on isolated bases while avoiding large-scale confrontations," said Dr. Kabiru Adamu, a security consultant based in Abuja.

The Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI has since deployed reinforcements to the Magumeri area and launched clearance patrols to track and neutralise the fleeing attackers. The army appealed to residents to report suspicious movements and assured that the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers would not be in vain.
