Former President Goodluck Jonathan may formally enter the 2027 presidential race as early as today, with support groups mobilising to purchase the ₦100 million nomination form of the Peoples Democratic Party on his behalf.

A source close to the Jonathan camp told Sahara Reporters on Sunday that the former president would pick up the form on Monday, ahead of the Tuesday deadline for the submission of completed forms. “Goodluck Jonathan will pick up the PDP nomination form on Monday. The consultations are done. The people have spoken,” the source was quoted as saying.

However, a separate associate of the former president, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, cautioned that no firm decision had been taken and that Jonathan was still weighing his options. “The pressure is immense, but the former president has not given a final answer. He is concerned about the state of the party and the country. If he runs, it will be a decision made in the national interest, not personal ambition,” the associate said.

Jonathan, who lost the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari, has largely shied away from partisan politics since leaving office, focusing on international peace missions and election observation. However, his name has remained a constant fixture in political conversations, particularly among groups seeking a candidate with a pan-Nigerian appeal.

The PDP nomination form costs ₦100 million, an amount that support groups have pledged to raise. The party is expected to hold its presidential primary later this year, with the Tanimu Turaki-led faction having already met with Jonathan last week.

If Jonathan enters the race, he will dramatically reshape the opposition landscape, potentially drawing significant support from the South-South, the Christian community, and northern moderates opposed to the Tinubu administration.
