Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

In a potentially significant realignment of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 presidential election, loyalists of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have endorsed former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as their preferred candidate for the 2027 contest.

The endorsement was announced on Friday in Abuja during a coalition meeting attended by members of the Obidient Movement, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, and the Coalition of Atiku Support Groups Initiative. In a joint communiqué read by the convener, the groups declared that Obi represents "the best hope for a new Nigeria" and called for a unified opposition platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.

"We have all fought on separate platforms in the past. The lesson of 2023 is that a divided opposition cannot dislodge a failing ruling party. We are therefore calling for the consolidation of all progressive forces behind a single candidate, and we believe that candidate is Peter Obi," the communiqué stated.

The development is significant because it suggests that the grassroots structures of the three opposition heavyweights Obi, Kwankwaso, and Atiku are moving ahead of their principals in forging unity. However, it remains unclear whether Kwankwaso and Atiku themselves will endorse the move. Both men have presidential ambitions of their own and have not indicated a willingness to step aside.

The endorsement comes as Obi and Kwankwaso recently joined the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while Atiku remains in the PDP but has also signalled openness to coalition politics. The NDC has emerged as a fast-rising force, with 19 National Assembly members defecting to it this week.

The ruling APC has dismissed the coalition moves, with its National Publicity Secretary describing them as "a gathering of failed politicians who have nothing new to offer Nigerians."
