Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Nigerian Navy has arrested several suspects in connection with an oil pipeline syndicate operating in Bayelsa State, disrupting a criminal network that has contributed significantly to the nation's huge losses from crude oil theft.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Adams Aliu, said the operation was conducted by personnel of Operation Delta Sanity in collaboration with intelligence agencies. The operatives stormed a hideout in a creek in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, where they discovered a facility used for large-scale illegal bunkering and the processing of stolen crude oil.

Items recovered during the raid included high-capacity pumping machines, welding equipment, hoses, and several storage tanks containing thousands of litres of crude oil and illegally refined diesel. The Navy said the syndicate was directly connected to pipeline taps that siphoned crude from a major trunk line.

“This is a major disruption of a long-standing network that has been draining the nation’s resources. Our investigations indicate that the syndicate has international connections, with some of the products allegedly smuggled across the Gulf of Guinea. We will ensure that those arrested face the full weight of the law and that the facilities are completely dismantled,” Commodore Aliu said.

The theft of crude oil has cost Nigeria billions of dollars annually, eroding government revenue and depressing the country’s export volumes at a time when the economy needs every available dollar. The Federal Government declared a state of emergency on crude oil theft in 2023 and launched several security initiatives to combat the scourge.

Community leaders in Bayelsa have long called for a multi-stakeholder approach that includes the youth and traditional institutions to address the root causes of illegal refining, including poverty and unemployment. The Navy says it will continue to intensify its patrols and called on residents to provide credible information to security agencies.
