Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has recorded its largest single operation against a transnational drug syndicate, dismantling an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in the Ijebu area of Ogun State and seizing chemical materials valued at approximately ₦480 billion ($363 million).

NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), announced the operation at a press briefing on Thursday. He said the laboratory, hidden within a sprawling farm estate, was capable of producing several tons of crystal methamphetamine weekly, destined for markets in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

"This is the biggest methamphetamine laboratory ever discovered in Nigeria and one of the largest on the African continent. The cartel behind it is truly transnational, and our investigation has uncovered links to Mexican drug trafficking organisations," Marwa said.

Seven suspects were arrested during the raid, including four Nigerians and three Mexican nationals. Items recovered included 2.4 tons of chemical precursors, sophisticated laboratory equipment, centrifuges, vacuum pumps, and an array of finished methamphetamine crystals ready for distribution.

The NDLEA said the operation was the culmination of a six-month investigation involving intelligence sharing with international partners, including the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and INTERPOL. The suspects are in custody and will be prosecuted under Nigerian law, while extradition requests may be considered.
