Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has recorded one of its largest seizures in recent history, intercepting 4,173.5 kilogrammes of Canadian Loud, a high-potency strain of cannabis, at Tincan Island Port in Lagos.

NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the operation in a statement on Friday. He said the consignment, valued at approximately N10.43 billion, was smuggled from Toronto, Canada, concealed in a shipping container declared as containing legitimate goods.

"Months of intelligence gathering and coordinated surveillance by our operatives led to this seizure. The drugs were hidden inside a container that had been under watch since it departed Canada. Several suspects have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing," Babafemi said.

Canadian Loud is a genetically modified strain of cannabis with significantly higher THC levels than traditional cannabis. It commands premium prices in illicit drug markets. The NDLEA has expressed concern that Nigeria is increasingly being used as a transit hub and destination market for high-grade narcotics from the Americas.

The Chairman of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the operatives and reiterated the agency's determination to dismantle international drug trafficking cartels operating in Nigeria.
