Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed five inspectors from the Department of Operations Patrol Team in Port Harcourt over their alleged involvement in a criminal syndicate engaged in kidnapping, armed robbery, extortion, and official corruption.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, confirmed the dismissals in a statement on Friday. He said an internal investigation had established a prima facie case against the officers, whose names have been withheld pending formal prosecution. The case file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal action.

In a wider operation, eight officers were arrested for similar offences. While five have been dismissed, three suspects remain at large, and a manhunt has been launched for their arrest.

"The Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of IGP Rilwan Disu will not tolerate criminality within its ranks. Officers who choose to become criminals will be treated as criminals. There are no sacred cows," DCP Placid stated.

The dismissals come amid a broader crackdown on police misconduct ordered by the Inspector General, following public outrage over incidents of extrajudicial conduct and corruption. The IGP recently ordered a nationwide arms audit and the mass redeployment of officers in Delta State following a similar scandal.

Civil society organisations have welcomed the dismissals but urged the police to ensure that the prosecution is thorough and transparent.
