The National Judicial Council has wielded the disciplinary stick and extended the hand of elevation in a single session, suspending two judges for misconduct while recommending the appointment of twelve new justices to the Court of Appeal.
The decisions were reached at the NJC's 111th meeting, which concluded on Friday under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun. A statement signed by the NJC's Director of Information said the suspended judges one from a state high court and the other from a federal high court were found guilty of judicial misconduct, including the abuse of discretion and failure to deliver judgments within constitutionally stipulated periods.
Both judges will serve a one-year suspension without pay and will not be assigned judicial duties during this period. The NJC also issued letters of warning to three other judicial officers.
In the same session, the Council recommended twelve senior judges for elevation to the Court of Appeal to address the growing case backlog at the appellate level. The list has been forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for formal appointment, subject to Senate confirmation.
The NJC's actions signal a dual commitment to enforcing accountability within the judiciary while strengthening the appellate court to handle the rising volume of cases.
