The political calculus ahead of the 2027 presidential election has shifted significantly with the confirmation by former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso that he will work closely with Peter Obi under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Kwankwaso, speaking to associates in Kano over the weekend, said the alliance between his Kwankwasiyya movement and Obi's Obidient movement is now a settled matter. "We have agreed to work together. The NDC is our platform. We are committed to rescuing Nigeria," Kwankwaso stated.

The partnership is seen as a strategic masterstroke, combining Obi's overwhelming support among urban youth, the South-East, and the South-South with Kwankwaso's formidable grassroots political machine in Kano and the wider North-West. In the 2023 elections, both men contested separately and split the opposition vote, contributing to the APC's victory.

Political analysts say the alliance, if sustained, could fundamentally reshape the electoral map. "An Obi-Kwankwaso ticket or alliance pulls the two largest opposition voting blocs together. It is a game-changer," said Dr. Abubakar Bala, a political scientist at Bayero University, Kano.

The NDC, founded by Senator Seriake Dickson, has rapidly grown in national prominence, attracting 19 National Assembly members and positioning itself as the main vehicle for opposition unity. The party has zoned its presidential ticket to the South.
