Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and veteran opposition figure, Buba Galadima, has launched a blistering critique of the Electoral Act 2026, alleging that its provisions were deliberately designed to weaken opposition political parties and create an uneven playing field that favours the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Speaking at a political forum in Abuja on Monday, Galadima cited several sections of the Act, including the new requirements for party membership registers, as examples of provisions that, in his view, place disproportionate administrative burdens on smaller and less resourced opposition parties.

"The Electoral Act 2026 is not a neutral framework. It is a weapon of political warfare disguised as legislation. It was designed to suffocate the opposition and clear the path for the APC in 2027. We must call it out for what it is," Galadima said.

He called on civil society organisations, the media, and the international community to scrutinise the Act and its implementation closely, warning that a compromised electoral framework poses a direct threat to Nigeria's democracy.

INEC has defended the Act, saying it introduces necessary reforms to enhance electoral integrity and transparency. The Commission confirmed last week that all 22 registered political parties have now submitted their membership registers in compliance with the law.
