Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Significant cracks have appeared in the opposition coalition aiming to challenge the All Progressives Congress in 2027, after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's insistence on a northern presidential candidate triggered resistance from key stakeholders committed to power rotation to the South.

Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, is reportedly convinced that only a northern candidate can defeat President Tinubu in 2027. His stance has put him at odds with leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, which has officially zoned its presidential ticket to the South for one term of four years.

Atiku criticised the NDC's zoning decision, describing it as premature and a setback for opposition unity.

“Zoning cannot be imposed by a few individuals without broader consultation. If we are serious about winning, we must keep all options open, including a northern candidate,” Atiku was quoted as telling associates.

However, his position has not gone down well with influential figures from the South and Middle Belt. They argue that after eight years of northern presidency under Muhammadu Buhari, equity demands that power return to the South.

The dispute has exposed the fragility of the coalition that many hoped would pose a united front.
