Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has assured the people of Plateau State that the wave of killings and violence that has claimed scores of lives in recent weeks will soon come to an end, as his administration intensifies efforts to restore peace and security.

The governor made the statement on Friday in Jos while reacting to the killing of 13 people in Ngbra Zongo community in Bassa Local Government Area in the early hours of Thursday and the mass burial attack in Barkin Ladi that left many feared dead on Wednesday. Mutfwang described the attacks as "barbaric and unacceptable" and promised that his government would not rest until those responsible were brought to justice.

"We are working closely with security agencies and community leaders to ensure that our people can sleep with their two eyes closed again. These attacks are designed to provoke and divide us, but we will not be divided. We will defeat this evil," the governor said.

Mutfwang disclosed that his administration had approved the recruitment of additional community police constables, increased funding for local vigilante groups, and was in talks with the Federal Government for the establishment of a permanent military forward operating base in the most affected areas.

However, residents and community leaders have expressed frustration with what they describe as a gap between government assurances and the reality on the ground. A coalition of Berom ethnic organisations has documented over 500 deaths between November 2025 and April 2026 alone, and the attacks have continued into May with no sign of abating.

United States Congressman Riley Moore has called for sanctions against Nigeria over the government's alleged failure to protect Christian communities in Plateau, a development that has added international pressure on both the state and federal governments.

The Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace have not issued fresh statements on the latest attacks at the time of this briefing.
