Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Presidency has issued a firm assurance that the Federal Government is determined to end the wave of killings sweeping across parts of the country, while acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to defend themselves against unlawful attacks.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said President Bola Tinubu is deeply pained by the continuing loss of lives in Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, and other states. He stated that security forces have been given clear directives to intensify operations and that the government is deploying additional resources to affected areas.

"The President is determined to end these killings. No Nigerian should live in fear. The government is working day and night to restore peace and security. However, we also recognise that under the 1999 Constitution, citizens have the right to use reasonable force to defend themselves, their families, and their property when faced with unlawful violence," Onanuga said.

The statement appeared to acknowledge the growing frustration in communities that have resorted to self-help, including the formation of local vigilante groups. The military's Operation Enduring Peace in Plateau State has previously condemned what it described as "unsanctioned" local defence groups, but community leaders argue that the state has failed in its primary duty to protect lives and property.

Onanuga urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies and provide credible intelligence, warning that criminal elements seeking to exploit the security vacuum would face the full weight of the law.
