The office of the Senate President has strongly denied allegations contained in a viral video circulating on social media that Senate President Godswill Akpabio threatened Northerners to vote for President Bola Tinubu in 2027 or leave Nigeria.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Senate President, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the office described the video as "false, malicious and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and create unnecessary tension." The statement said the voice in the video does not belong to Senator Akpabio and the content is entirely fabricated.
"This is the work of mischief makers intent on poisoning the political atmosphere and setting one region against another. The Senate President never made such statements. We call on security agencies to investigate the origin of this video and bring those responsible to book," the statement read.
A group, the Northern Democratic Front, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, seeking the arrest of the individual behind the video. The group described the fabrication as "a dangerous attempt to stoke ethnic and regional division."
The viral video, which surfaced over the weekend, has been widely circulated on WhatsApp, X, and Facebook, sparking reactions across the political spectrum. The Senate President's office has urged the public to disregard the video and rely only on verified information from official channels.
