Abuja, FCT – By Prime Brief Media
The Tanimu Turaki-led national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has scheduled the screening of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party's sole presidential aspirant for today, Tuesday, 19 May, at the party's national secretariat in Abuja.
The screening, which is expected to commence at 10:00 a.m., comes after support groups mobilised to purchase the ₦100 million nomination form for Jonathan, who served as President from 2011 to 2015. The former president has not formally declared his candidacy but has repeatedly stated that he is consulting widely.
A source within the Turaki-led faction told Prime Brief Media that the screening committee, comprising senior party officials and legal experts, will examine Jonathan's credentials and eligibility. "Everything is set. The committee will conduct a thorough screening, and we expect a smooth process," the source said.
However, Jonathan's candidacy is clouded by a legal challenge currently before a Federal High Court in Abuja. The suit, filed by a political group, argues that Jonathan is constitutionally barred from seeking a fresh term, having already served two terms, one as acting President and one as elected President. The court has fixed 26 May for judgment in the eligibility suit.
The screening and the impending court decision will shape the PDP's presidential primary and could have far-reaching implications for the 2027 election landscape.
