The race for the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in Gombe State took a dramatic turn on Sunday as Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje rejected a consensus arrangement brokered by party stakeholders and demanded that all aspirants be allowed to test their popularity through a transparent direct primary.

Goje, a former governor of the state and a dominant figure in Gombe politics, made his position known in a statement released by his campaign office. The senator, who represents Gombe Central, said the move to handpick a candidate for the 2027 governorship election was “antithetical to democratic principles and the spirit of the party’s constitution.”

“I am a firm believer in internal democracy. There is no shortcut to unity. Let all aspirants who have legitimately purchased nomination forms face the delegates or party members in a free and fair primary. Anything short of that will create avoidable tension and disaffection,” Goje said.

The consensus deal had reportedly been brokered by a group of elders and was intended to produce a single candidate to avoid the kind of contentious primary that left the party weakened in the previous cycle. Sources within the party, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Prime Brief Media that the arrangement had the quiet backing of top national figures. However, Goje’s rejection has thrown the process into uncertainty and could trigger a wider internal power struggle.

Political observers note that Goje’s influence in the state is considerable and that any credible primary will need his active buy-in. “Goje has the structure, the resources, and the followership. His rejection of the consensus is a political earthquake in Gombe APC,” said Yusuf Adamu, a Gombe-based political analyst.

The APC National Working Committee has yet to comment on the development, but the matter is expected to come up at the next meeting of the State Caucus.
