Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has announced the appointment of a 13-member interim National Working Committee to oversee the party’s affairs following a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the previous leadership structure.

The Chairman of the BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara, made the announcement at an emergency meeting of the board held in Abuja on Sunday night. He said the interim committee would be chaired by Tanimu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Minister of Special Duties, who would serve as the acting National Chairman.

The Supreme Court had, in a judgment delivered last week, ruled that the tenure extension granted to the previous NWC was unconstitutional, creating a leadership vacuum that threatened to derail the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections. The ruling was the culmination of months of fierce legal and factional battles between rival groups within the party.

“In compliance with the judgment of the apex court and in exercise of the powers vested in the Board of Trustees as the conscience of the party, we have appointed an interim NWC to stabilise our great party and lead us into a national convention within the next 90 days,” Wabara said.

Other members of the interim committee include high-ranking figures from the party's six geopolitical zones, carefully selected to maintain regional balance. The committee is mandated to oversee the day-to-day affairs of the party, reconcile warring factions, and organize a credible convention.

The PDP, which ruled Nigeria for 16 consecutive years before its 2015 defeat, has struggled with internal cohesion in recent years. The Supreme Court’s intervention, though clarifying the legal standing, has now placed immense pressure on the interim leadership to unify a deeply fractured base.

The All Progressives Congress has yet to issue a formal reaction to the development, but a party source who declined to be named said the ruling party was “closely monitoring” the realignment.
