Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has formally thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 presidential election, declaring his intention to run on the platform of the African Action Congress.

Sowore made the declaration on Friday at a press conference in Abuja, where he unveiled his campaign theme and launched a scathing critique of the political establishment. He said Nigeria has been trapped in a cycle of misery because of a leadership class that prioritises personal enrichment over national development.

"Nigeria is drowning in poverty, insecurity, pain, sorrow and tears. The two major parties have failed our people. We are offering a genuine alternative. Our campaign will be about the people, for the people, and by the people," Sowore said.

The AAC, which he founded, remains his political vehicle. Sowore confirmed that the party's presidential primary will be held next week, where he is expected to emerge as the sole candidate. He called on young Nigerians, workers, and the dispossessed to join the movement for "a real revolution at the ballot box."

Sowore contested the 2019 and 2023 elections and remains a polarising but influential voice in Nigerian civil society. His 2027 bid adds to an increasingly crowded field of aspirants seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
