The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has officially declared Monday, 18th May 2026, as the first day of Zulhijja 1447AH, signalling the commencement of the sacred month of Hajj.

The declaration was made in a statement issued on Sunday night following verified reports of the sighting of the new crescent moon across several locations in Nigeria. The Sultan urged Muslims to intensify prayers and acts of worship during the holy month, which culminates in the celebration of Eid al-Kabir.

"His Eminence the Sultan has declared tomorrow, Monday, 18th May 2026, as the first day of Zulhijja 1447AH. The crescent was sighted in multiple locations and verified by the National Moon Sighting Committee. He wishes all Muslims a blessed and peaceful month," the statement read.

The declaration means that Eid al-Kabir, which falls on the 10th day of Zulhijja, will be observed on Wednesday, 27th May 2026, subject to further moon sighting confirmation. The period between now and the Eid is marked by increased charitable giving, fasting, and preparations by pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia.

The Sultan also called for heightened prayers for peace, unity, and security across Nigeria, noting that the nation faces multiple challenges that require divine intervention and collective resolve. Muslim leaders across the country have echoed the Sultan's call.
