Team Nigeria's contingent of para-powerlifters has arrived in Algeria for the 2026 African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships, which officially open today and run until 24 May. The team is aiming to extend Nigeria's dominance in the sport on the continent.

The Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation confirmed that the team, comprising some of Africa's most decorated lifters, departed from Abuja on Wednesday and landed safely in Algiers. The contingent includes Paralympic and world champions who have consistently delivered medals for Nigeria at international competitions.

Federation President, Mrs. Ijeoma Nnaji, expressed confidence in the team's preparation. "Our athletes have trained hard and are in excellent shape. Nigeria has a proud tradition in para-powerlifting, and we are going to Algeria to maintain that tradition. We expect nothing short of a commanding performance," Nnaji said.

The African Open serves as a qualifier for the World Para-Powerlifting Championships and offers athletes the opportunity to improve their international rankings. Nigeria topped the medals table at the last edition of the championships, and the federation says the target is to do even better this time.

The National Sports Commission has congratulated the team and urged them to make the nation proud.
