Fifty cyclists departed Lagos on Friday, June 12, embarking on a 1,110‑kilometre cross‑border expedition across four West African countries – Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana – in a bold demonstration of sustainable transport and climate advocacy.

The journey, organized by a coalition of environmental groups, will prevent an estimated 12.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions compared to equivalent travel by motor vehicle. The cyclists aim to raise awareness about climate change and promote cycling as a green alternative to fossil fuel‑powered transport.

The expedition will pass through major cities including Cotonou, Lomé, and Accra, with stopovers for community engagement and environmental education. The cyclists include professional riders, activists, and young volunteers.

"We want to show that sustainable transport is not only possible but also enjoyable. Every kilometre we pedal is a statement that we care about our planet," the lead cyclist said.

The expedition is expected to take approximately two weeks. Upon arrival in Accra, the cyclists will participate in a climate summit with West African environmental leaders.
