June 20, 2026 – Abuja, Nigeria
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has identified malnutrition, drug abuse and the unchecked influx of foreigners to Nigeria's media space as emerging factors fuelling insecurity in the country.
The NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo, warned that hunger and desperation are pushing many Nigerians into criminality, while drug abuse is impairing the judgment of young people and making them more susceptible to recruitment by criminal groups.
The NUJ called for urgent government action to address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity.
