OTUKPO, BENUE STATE — June 30, 2026
Security deployments along the Agatu–Apa–Otukpo corridor in Benue State have reportedly been scaled down following the recent killing of a leader of a Fulani breeders' association in Otukpo, according to multiple local sources.
Several credible sources told Prime Brief Media that Mobile Police personnel previously stationed at strategic flashpoints, including Ataganyi, Oweto, Ikobi, and Ikor, are no longer visible at their duty posts.
Prime Brief Media has not independently verified whether the reported reduction in security personnel was officially ordered or the reasons behind the development.
According to the sources, there were previously seven active security checkpoints along the Agatu–Otukpo corridor. However, as of the time of filing this report, only two checkpoints were reportedly still operational.
Residents of Ikobi, Akpete, Ogodumu, Igah, and neighbouring communities expressed concern that the reduced security presence could leave residents and commuters more vulnerable to criminal activities, including kidnappings and attacks by armed groups.
Some community members described the security checkpoints as a critical deterrent against violent attacks and appealed to the relevant authorities to urgently review the current security arrangements.
They called on the Federal Government, the Benue State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to assess the situation and, where necessary, restore adequate security deployments along the corridor to safeguard lives and property.
The residents also urged humanitarian and development partners, as well as the international community, to closely monitor the evolving security situation and support efforts aimed at preventing further violence.
As of the time of publication, Prime Brief Media had not received an official statement from the Nigeria Police Force or other relevant security agencies regarding the reported reduction in security checkpoints.
