Former Benue SSG Prof. David Salifu reportedly dies after attack on Wukari–Makurdi Highway

Former Benue State Secretary to the State Government, Prof. David Salifu, has reportedly died after sustaining injuries during a reported attack along the Wukari–Makurdi highway. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement.

MAKURDI, BENUE STATE – July 3, 2026

Former Benue State Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. David Salifu, has reportedly died after sustaining injuries during a reported security incident along the Wukari–Makurdi highway.

According to preliminary reports, the former senior government official was travelling from Wukari towards Makurdi on Thursday when the incident occurred.

Initial accounts indicate that Prof. Salifu reportedly escaped from suspected kidnappers during the attack but sustained gunshot injuries in the process.

He was said to have been rushed to a hospital in Makurdi, where he later died on Thursday night.

However, Prime Brief Media has not independently verified these claims, and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

As of the time of publication, neither the Benue State Government, the Benue State Police Command, nor other security agencies had issued an official statement confirming the reported attack or Prof. Salifu's death.

Similarly, the family of the former SSG had not released a public statement.

Prime Brief Media is making efforts to obtain official confirmation from the relevant authorities.

The reported incident comes amid growing concerns over insecurity along major highways linking Benue State with neighbouring states, where motorists have repeatedly reported cases of armed attacks and kidnappings.

Prime Brief Media will continue to monitor the situation and update this report as more verified information becomes available.
