Nine Members of Same Family Killed in Fresh Plateau Attack

Nine members of one family, including an infant, were killed in a deadly attack on Riyom communities in Plateau State as residents call for stronger security measures.

Riyom, Plateau State - July 12, 2026

Nine members of one family, including an infant, have been killed after gunmen attacked communities in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State in another deadly assault that has renewed concerns over insecurity in the state.

Residents said the attackers stormed Kum and Wereng-Camp communities late Saturday night, firing indiscriminately and moving from house to house during an operation that reportedly lasted for more than an hour.

By the time the attackers retreated, nine members of the same family had lost their lives while another relative sustained serious injuries.

The incident has been described by locals as one of the most devastating attacks recorded in the area this year.

Community leaders confirmed that the victims included women, young adults, children and an infant, highlighting the devastating impact of the attack on a single household.

One surviving family member is reportedly receiving medical treatment after sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association condemned the killings and alleged that the attackers operated from criminal hideouts around the Fass axis.

The group called on security agencies to intensify military operations against armed groups operating in vulnerable communities across Plateau State.

Plateau State has experienced recurring attacks and communal violence over the years despite repeated security interventions.

The latest killings are likely to renew calls for stronger intelligence gathering, improved community protection and decisive action against criminal groups.

Security agencies are expected to investigate the attack while residents continue to call for increased deployment of security personnel to vulnerable communities.

Prime Brief Media will monitor official updates as investigations progress.
