Idoma Diaspora Group Plans to Petition Trump Over Benue Killings

The Idoma Association USA says it will petition President Trump over persistent killings and displacement in Benue South, demanding a terrorist designation and sanctions against those responsible.

Washington, D.C. / Benue State — August 10, 2026

The Idoma Association USA (IAUSA) has resolved to petition United States President Donald Trump over what it describes as persistent killings, displacement, and deteriorating security across Benue South Senatorial District and other parts of Benue State.

The group said it would formally request that the US government designate the perpetrators of the violence as terrorists and impose sanctions on individuals responsible for orchestrating or enabling the attacks.

The move adds to a growing pattern of diaspora and advocacy groups from Nigeria's Middle Belt appealing directly to US authorities and lawmakers over the region's security crisis, following Washington's redesignation of Nigeria as a "Country of Particular Concern" over religious freedom issues in recent months.

It remains to be seen whether the petition will influence US policy toward the ongoing violence in the region.
