The Benue State Police Command has arrested 17 suspects in connection with a mob attack on its officers at Adagi community along the Jato-Aka–Adikpo Road in Kwande Local Government Area, an assault that left one officer severely injured with machete cuts and another in a coma on life support.
Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu confirmed the arrests in Makurdi, saying the attack occurred as officers responded to the scene of a fatal road accident.
He said the command has launched a thorough investigation and vowed that everyone responsible would be brought to justice.
Nwadiogbu warned communities across the state against taking the law into their own hands, describing mob justice as a criminal offence that would not be tolerated. He urged residents to allow police to handle criminal matters and to channel grievances through appropriate legal means rather than resorting to violence.
The arrests come amid heightened concern over the safety of security personnel across Benue State, following the recent attacks on police in Logo LGA's Ayilamo community, which claimed the lives of six officers within a four-day span, and separate ambushes in Katsina-Ala.
Together, these incidents paint a picture of security personnel facing threats not only from armed bandits, but, in this case, from civilian mobs reacting to unrelated emergencies, a distinct and troubling dimension of the risk officers face in the state.
